Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Brown’s death – shot – laid in the lockers.. (Scott’s “guy Mannering”)

laid in the locker = dead, perished

In her last attempt, she pulled down a set of lockers on top of him. He laid there motionless and breathless... he was dead.

locker (department of the refrigeration unit)
