what is the part of speech of ‘round’ here? #1 (permalink) Mon Oct 11, 2010 15:07 pm   what is the part of speech of ‘round’ here?

Dear teachers and friends,
Would you please explain me what is the part of speech of ‘round’ in this sentence?'There is a yellow fence round the bicycle park’. Is it preposition or....and also what word does replace instead of it?
In advance, thank you very much
Mitra

'round' here is the same as 'around' and is a preposition.
The adverb 'about' might replace it.
Alternatively you could write, "There is a yellow fence surrounding the bicycle park.'
