Feedback for argument essay #1 (permalink) Fri Oct 22, 2010 2:40 am   Feedback for argument essay

An Argument i have tried to analyse. Please give comments and feedback and also tips to improve.
Thanks in advance.
"Mesa Foods, a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets its products within a relatively small region of the country, has a strong growth potential. Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, has had increased sales over each of the past three years. Since Omni Inc. is interested in reaching 14-to-25 year olds, the age group that consumes the most snack food, we should buy Mesa Foods, and concentrate in particular on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country."

In the argument presented above, according to Omni Inc. it should buy Mesa Foods and concentrate on marketing its best selling product Diabolique Salsa. This is not the case as the argument is flawed in two fronts explained in detail in the next two paragraphs.
Firstly Mesa Foods is a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets its products within a relatively small region of the country. The popularity Diabolique Salsa and other products of Mesa Foods is constrained to a small region of the country. But Omni Inc. Plans on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country, which may not prove to be successful as its popularity in the whole region is not yet determined.
Secondly the target group which enjoys Diabolique Salsa has not been specified in the argument. As Omni Inc. is interested in catering to the specific target group of 14-25 year olds, an inconsistency arises and it cannot be determined if the marketing of the product, Diabolique Salsa will be a successful venture for the group.
Thus the argument cannot be used to say if the Omni Inc. group should buy Mesa Foods as data relevant to the context is missing.
