Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

If the queer fellow tried to come any acid he would get his deserts.

come the acid = behave in a provoking manner

Thank you for your efforts.

I've never heard that expression and wouldn't have the first idea what it meant if someone said it to me. I have looked it up and apparently it means to behave in an acid manner (using bitter or cutting remarks and gestures).
