Hi Elga,

You ask for the meaning of this sentence:

Quote:
Whom shall I fear, but the ones who hurt me?

This is what's called a rhetorical question - no-one has to answer it and it means:

The only people I need to be frightened of are those people who hurt me (give me pain)

Why do we use whom and not who in this sentence?

Meaning of 'Who shall I fear, but the ones who hurt me' #6 (permalink) Sun Jan 10, 2010 8:40 am   Meaning of 'Who shall I fear, but the ones who hurt me'

I fear somebody.
You can see, in this sentence, I is the subject, and somebody is the object. A object pronoun is needed here, so we choose whom rather than who.

If we change this sentence into 'Somebody hits me', then we can ask 'Who hits me?' for here somebody is a subject.

Hope this helps.

hi,
we often use who in order to refer to the ( subject )of the sentence.
And we use whom to refer to the ( object ) of the sentence.
I hope I've been helpful.

Hi,
To continue my answer about ( who & whom).
The (subject )= it's the person or the thing who does the action( does the verb).
The ( object )= it's the person or the thing whom the action or the verb is done on him/it.
