Tomorrow, November the 1st. is a public holiday here in Germany. Only those who are obliged to work will be doing so. Today family members of the deceased have been arriving in droves to tidy up the Autumn-leaf covered burial sites of their family member/s Headstones have been washed and the soil surfaces of the graves have been raked and made presentable. Tomorrow, almost every grave in the cemetery will be bedecked with floral wreaths, and with the coming of dusk, the cemetery will be eerily illuminated with hundreds of twinkling candles. Families will congregate at the gravesides of their departed, and will often be joined by absent friends. November the 1st. is, "The day of the dead." The day when the life of the departed is celebrated and recalled.
Over the coming weeks many of the graves will return to their usual neglected state, but at least the neighbours will have nothing to gossip about!
