It's ironic that the weakest student in mathematics was elected class treasurer.

Why do I not have to add "the" before "class treasure"?

Can I write this way?

Hi,

You don't have to add 'the'. If you do, you are emphasising the noun, referring to it as someone or something in particular. In your sentence 'was elected treasurer' states that the student go this job. If you say 'was elected the treasurer', you are saying the student got this job and not any other job.
