Hi, I’ve just come across this swear word – I know it’s a rather bad one but how strong is it really and how often is it used? The word is ‘wanker’ – my Babylon dictionary says it’s of British origin meaning ‘use another word’, ‘stupid person’... Thanks |
Hi Savvythought, This isn't a swear work it's just a contemptuous word to describe someone you consider to be worthless, inferior and basically useless. It's a word used by men about other men and isn't used in so-called 'polite' society. It has a sexual origin and comes I would say from army sources and literally means someone who masturbates. _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Present Simple |

| It actually depends on the person who talks or the topic you talk about. Because the use of a word goes with the things you talk about. When you talk about sex acts and everything about it, it's likely that this term will be used often. Based on what Mr. Alan said, it's unlikely that this word will be used often in so called "polite society". |

The origin of this word wanker is a german word Wanken which means shake and that later on being known as masturbation in the english world. Sometimes this also refers to insensitive person. Normally it is used to call some one an idiot. Like:
If you have any sense and if you are not wankers, just keep the best stuff away from those gannets. |
