There you are #2 (permalink) Sat Feb 25, 2006 22:42 pm   There you are

Hi,

This expression is used when you've just done something for someone and you are handing something to someone. It's similar to saying: Here you are - in this case the employee is handing the cereal packet to the old lady.

Excuse me Alan
Thank you for your expression. but could you explain clearly more, please. When we use 'here you are' and 'there you are'
for example
1, Could you show your ID, please?
Yes, Here you are
2, I would like to have that book
Yes, There you are
In these case whether we can use 'there you are' and 'here you are'
and which situation we can use 'here you are' and 'there you are'
thanks in advance

" Here you are, and There you are "....... are usually interchangeable, and can be used so in most circumstances.

" There you are ! " This can also be used upon finally finding someone that you have been searching/looking for ..... " Ah, there you are ! "

Hi Khanhphamqn,

'Here' and 'there' convey the same idea as 'this' and 'that'. 'Here you are' refers to this place in front of you. 'There you are' refers to that place over there. In the context of the test the choice of 'There you are' indicates that the employee has found what the old lady wanted from another place rather than 'Here you are' suggesting that the cereal packet is right in front of the old lady.
