Hi,
This expression is used when you've just done something for someone and you are handing something to someone. It's similar to saying: Here you are - in this case the employee is handing the cereal packet to the old lady.

" Here you are, and There you are "....... are usually interchangeable, and can be used so in most circumstances.
" There you are ! " This can also be used upon finally finding someone that you have been searching/looking for ..... " Ah, there you are ! " _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

Hi Khanhphamqn,
'Here' and 'there' convey the same idea as 'this' and 'that'. 'Here you are' refers to this place in front of you. 'There you are' refers to that place over there. In the context of the test the choice of 'There you are' indicates that the employee has found what the old lady wanted from another place rather than 'Here you are' suggesting that the cereal packet is right in front of the old lady.

One other type of informal usage that I can think of to add to the list: "There you are" can also be dismissive, with the meaning 'What's done is done and there is no more to be done now." as in a conversation such as:
"I told him not to go, but he went anyway." "There you are, then." _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
