Hi All,

I have just started reading one book - The Hobbit.
In there, there is a sentence - "we have all the day before us".
I could understand the context but still I need the meaning. I wanted to know what is the meaning of "before us".

Thanks in advance!!!

First of all, Thanks a lot.
I would like to have meaning of another sentence -
"If you have a pipe about you,". I am confused that why here "about you".
I hope the reply. Thanks in advance.

It means if you have a pipe on your person (If you are carrying a pipe).

You'll find as you work through the book that hobbits, wizards and the like sometimes use a strange choice of phrase. ;).

Hi there,

Again I have one doubt :)
"Not the wandering wizard that gave Old Took a pair of magic
diamond studs that fastened themselves and never came undone till ordered?"

Here I wanted to know the meaning "never came undone till ordered" and also why there is question mark.

Thanks in advance.

'never came undone till ordered?'
The cufflinks were magic because they didn't accidentally come loose as studs sometimes do. Once fastened, they stayed that way, until the wearer ordered them to unfasten (undo).
They didn't unfasten until the wearer ordered them to.

The question mark is because the whole sentence is a question.
It can be expanded like this:
"You are surely not the wandering wizard that gave Old Took a pair of magic diamond studs..."
The same structure is used in the next sentence "Not the fellow (You are surely not the fellow) who used to tell such wonderful tales...'
The structure begins to repeat a third time, but this time, because Bilbo interrupts his own question with his memory of the fireworks an exclamation mark is used instead of a question mark.
At the end of the paragraph, the same structure is used for a fourth time, "Not the Gandalf who was responsible for..."
