Hi Carmen,

Your sentence describes an action in the near future - something you are planning to do very soon.
In these instances we use the Present Continuous (Present Progressive) not the Present Simple.

Does it mean that we don't have to use "to be going to" cause we have "later tonight"??

No, it doesn't. With 'later tonight' we can use the future with 'going to' as well.

Mmm.. i still confused with that sentence...

Later tonight I am visiting my uncle, who is ill in hospital.

What does 'later tonight' mean?? I thought it's a simple future... then I am visiting is for present progressive... can we use 'I'll visit'?

Hi Lili6,

As there is no future tense in English, we have to use various forms to express the idea of future. You can say: I am going to visit, which suggests that is your intention. You can say: I will visit, which suggests that this has been arranged. You can say: I am visiting , which indicates what is going to/will happen tonight. All three tell the reader/listener that this action 'visit' is in the future.
