Hi Carmen,
Your sentence describes an action in the near future - something you are planning to do very soon. In these instances we use the Present Continuous (Present Progressive) not the Present Simple.

| Does it mean that we don't have to use "to be going to" cause we have "later tonight"?? |

No, it doesn't. With 'later tonight' we can use the future with 'going to' as well. |

Mmm.. i still confused with that sentence...
Later tonight I am visiting my uncle, who is ill in hospital.
What does 'later tonight' mean?? I thought it's a simple future... then I am visiting is for present progressive... can we use 'I'll visit'? |

Hi Lili6,
As there is no future tense in English, we have to use various forms to express the idea of future. You can say: I am going to visit, which suggests that is your intention. You can say: I will visit, which suggests that this has been arranged. You can say: I am visiting , which indicates what is going to/will happen tonight. All three tell the reader/listener that this action 'visit' is in the future.
