Essay: Practical and theoretical knowledge - which better? Tue Feb 28, 2006 16:26 pm  Essay: Practical and theoretical knowledge - which better?

Hi, I have written another essay. Could somebody rate it, please? Or just say a couple of words, at least.... Thanks!!

It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

There are many sources from which you can get the information you need - you may ask someone, or you may find it in books.

One of the main sources where you can get information is reading about it from books. There are many books available in almost every sphere, and, which is very important, a lot of them are written by great specialists in a particular area. For example, you can learn who Celts were only by reading books about them. In this case it is even impossible to get some kind of practical knowledge as you cannot take part in archaeological excavations unless you are specially educated to do so.

Another source of information is the so-called practical knowledge, which you can get only by your own experience. This kind of knowledge is essential for many spheres in your life. For instance, how else can you learn how to bake a cake if you have never tried to do it? Another example of this could be related to sports – you may become an outstanding skater, skier, or a boxer if you have practiced a lot.

To my mind, it is very important to gain knowledge by an empirical way. Even the most experienced specialists make mistakes, and it is better to try to find the information by yourself as long as it is possible.

To sum up, I would like to mention that reading books is important but you cannot trust every word you read, so – do not be afraid finding things out by yourself, and perhaps the day will come when you discover something new.
