An integrated essay #1 (permalink) Sat Nov 20, 2010 9:16 am   An integrated essay

Mr. Kitos,
Please help me refine this essay.

The lecture and the reading passage both discuss the influence of the salvage logging. The reading passage mentions the benefits of it. However, the professor argues that it can cause further environmental damage.

There are three advantages of salvage logging provided in the reading passage. First, the practice of removing dead trees can pave way for fresh growth, which promotes forest's recover from disaster. Secondly, that practice reduces the decaying wood, which is a appropriate habitat for insects. Thus, it diminishes the dangers of insect infestation. Third, it provides lumbers for some industries. Also, the operation lends job opportunities for local residents.

However, the professor points out that practice would lead to negative impacts in the long term, proposing several reasons against the ideas in the reading passage. First, she asserts that decaying wood can provide nutrient to fertilize the soil, which benefits the fresh growth. Next, the decaying wood provides habitat for good insects as well as harmful insects. Those insects may help the balance of the ecology. At last, salvage logging only brings about temporary economical benefits. It provides only limited lumbers. Further, the operation of the practice may take expensive machines and need expert/ skilled workers instead of local residents.
