ok - "gadded" is the correct answer.
but could I use any other synonyms of walk in this sentence?
Wandered or roamed would be correct too?

Yes, in this sentence you could use wander or roam since they suggest moving about at random without a fixed course or goal. Roam implies freedom of movement, often over a wide area. You can also use stroll or saunter.
