Could you please answer my vocabulary questions about sustainability? #1 (permalink) Thu Mar 02, 2006 5:37 am   Could you please answer my vocabulary questions about sustainability?

Sir Alan,

I still do not know what to do . As I told you, I am translating an article. It is in English but the one who wrote that it is a German teacher.
The only things left to translate now are those sentences that I've sent to you. Still I am lost. So as you told me here is more about the text:
The precautionary principle focuses on risks to human health caused by direct contact with hazardous substances and radioactivity. These risks are not covered by the sustainability concept, even in the broad sense of preserving the assimilative capacity of the environment. Exposure to chemicals in the work place and exposure to harmful air pollutants are not includede either, unless one unreasonably streches the notion of assimilation and equates dirpersion with assimilations. Similar considerations obtain with respect to radioativity. The only one conclusion one can draw from this is that protection of human health against hazardous substances is not covered by the principle of sustainability and remains the domain of the precautionry principle. Of course, in further developing toe principle of sustainability, one could imagine an extension of the principle to the extent that, apart from preserving the carrying capacity of the environment, dangers and unreasonable risks to human life and health from hazardous substances and radiation must be avoided.

Sir Alan I do not understand the meaning of ...in further developing toe principle of sustainability, ...

As to the words ...ride that roust... here is a part of the text:

One should clearly distinguish between the environmental situations, i.e. the question whether a particular risk is unacceptable or shall merely be further reduced, and the question of which measures one can use to tackle the problem. In the case of forest damage, a comprehensive approach that address several pollutants suspected of contributing to forest damage and/or provides for the reduction of total emissions, regardlles of actual dispersion from a particular facility, may be appropriate. However, this does not allow reclassifying a clearly unacceptable ride that roust be prevented into a simple risk that only calls for further reduction.

I still do not understand the meaning of ...a clearly unacceptable ride that roust...
What is the meaning of that?
What does he (author) mean with ...ride that roust... ?
I thing that you are right it must be must instead of roust.

According to my dictionary Roust means: If you roust someone you disturb, upset,or hit them, or make them move from their place. (AM)

What do you think? What should I do to finish the translation? I am running out of time.
Could you help me please?
Thanks a lot
Angela

Meaning #2 (permalink) Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:44 am   Meaning

Hi Angela,

There are several spelling mistakes in the piece you have sent me, which makes explanation more difficult as below

...in further developing toe THE principle of sustainability, ...

This means if you want to develop/expand even more the principle of sustainability (the belief that natural resources should be maintained and not be exhausted by man)

clearly unacceptable ride that roust be prevented.

Clearly this doesn't make sense as it stands and I can only suggest - a clearly unacceptable route/direction (used here to mean the direction of a policy) that must be prevented ...

I would say that roust has no meaning here and is the wrong word.

Alan
