Would you help to me to interpret in plain English the meaning of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

He became, as he spoke, the bon viveur and scientist, making the best of two worlds. (C. P. Snow, “The Search”)

Youth or experience: Chelsea got the best of both worlds yesterday when they paid Cardiff over £30,000 for Graham Moore, the 20-year-old Welsh international center-forward.

bon viveur = boon-companion, easy-going man, man of the world

make the best of both (two) worlds = be efficient in usage of two contrary circumstances

Thanks for your efforts.
