the man is grilling on the barbecue?

On a TOEIC listening exercise i saw one possible answer to an image "The man is grilling on the barbecue" which describes a picture of a man who's broiling something on a gridiron. But if we imagined a picture of a man who's being broiled himself in something gridiron-like what would the sentence be?

"The man is being grilled on the barbecue"? Is this grammatically intelligible?

Less stupid :grill as a verb is transitive, isn't it?

The man is being grilled on the barbecue is grammatically sound. Hopefully it's not a sentence you would need to use though!

Personally, I would not use the original sentence as written. I would add a noun explaining what he is grilling.
The man is grilling sausages on the barbecue.
The man is grilling steak on the barbecue.
The man is grilling fish on the barbecue.
I suspect that in this particular exercise the object noun hasn't been written because it would be impossible to tell what was being grilled.

LOL. In that case 'the man is grilling food on the barbecue' would have been my choice of 'red herring'.
