In this sentence:

The first speaker is suggesting to the second speaker that they go out on a date together. I thought possibly means: This might be a good idea, don't you think?

if the sentence concerns present (tonight), why can't it be: I think possibly we could go out together, tonight.?

Grammatically, you could use 'think' but it's less polite. "I thought that...' is more like a suggestion for doing so. The speaker will wait to see what the listener says. "I think that..." is more one-sided. The speaker appears to not be so interested in what the listener thinks. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
