TOEFL Essay: The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset, there in lies the value of each.
The author’s view on “The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of science is to upset” is tenable. Science has the power to spread hope; art has its own way of spreading comfort to the mind. Therefore each has a value in itself.
Firstly, science through the ages has a noticeable increase in its advancement. Science has always stood beside mankind at times of peril and success alike. For example, even after the recent hurricane Catrina disaster, people did not panic too much. This is because technology was ready to put things right. This is just one of the few examples where science has given reassurance to the world at times of crisis. In addition, science has also explained the unexplainable. An example to fit this is, the way science has proved the earth is spherical and not flat. This way science has spread immense knowledge and a sense of security around the world.
Secondly, art cannot be ignored as a whole, in spite of the power science has, to lead the way to progress. In art, mainly during the renaissance, has been embedded many theories that science has not been able to explain. For example, controversial Da Vinci paintings have elucidated, the possible origins of man the way science has never been able to. However, because of facts like these art in no way can be held superior to science and vice versa.
In conclusion, science and art has its own qualities to admire and cherish. This shows the importance of each of the fields individually. This also proves, as the author says, one cannot over power the other and each has its own importance in its survival.
