Correction: I am sorry for my mistake. I wanted to write:...and was getting paid a champ change for his effort. /I omitted the essential word: CHUMP/

2.correction: It seems that I have a scatter brain: ...and was getting paid a CHUMP CHANGE for his effort.

I don't think this is a well known expression in the UK.
I could correctly guess at the meaning, but have never heard the term before.
