Why do you think people attend college or university? #1 (permalink) Sat Dec 25, 2010 22:19 pm   Why do you think people attend college or university?

Motivations for education
Furthering their studies, people have varieties of purposes which are discussable in different points of view such as psychological, social and economical.
Psychologically people possess different types of personality, each one drives them to do something, for example some people are characteristically obsessed in fame that can be some how achieved by attending university and getting high level of education. As such some people try so hard in scientific fields and might be by far more successful in their career than others.
Considering the economical aspect of life the higher level of educational degree, the more opportunities for employment in such a competitive environment we are involved with. Therefore going to university financially motives job hunters. For instance a person with the bachelor of management would have a lesser chance of being employed by a famous company than one with a master would have. However a very wealthy person who is not educated high enough is not considered as a person of high socioeconomic level of the society either. For this reason despite of being very rich many people would like to attend university.
All the above reasons are sort of extrinsic motives or to some extent materialistic, although there are still some goals for furthering study beyond these already mentioned which can be categorized as intrinsic value. That is, only for studying and educating itself some people participate universities or colleges. They like to be a part of productive science which would increase the human’s improvement and progression in different aspects of life.
To sum up, people might go to university for some extrinsic values such as being famous, finding a better job, making more money or being from a higher socioeconomic level although there are still some people who further their studies for an intrinsic value; learning something, discovering or altering the rules to make our world a better place.
