Meaning of the sentence #1 (permalink) Tue Dec 28, 2010 12:42 pm   Meaning of the sentence

Can you please tell me the meaning of this:
I asked the assistant which make of hi-fi he recommended
According to Oxford Dictionary :
Quote:
to make of: to understand the meaning or character of somebody/something
However, it seems not the case.
Also, give me some examples please.
Thanks in advance.

Meaning of the sentence #2 (permalink) Tue Dec 28, 2010 12:43 pm   Meaning of the sentence

"make" here means "brand".

For example:
Can you tell me the make of the car that just passed us by?

The Oxford dictionary defines it as "the manufacturer or trade name of a product":

Ah, I see. I mistook it and thought that "make of" is a phrasal verb. Understand now. Thank Tort.

Meaning of the sentence #4 (permalink) Tue Dec 28, 2010 15:31 pm   Meaning of the sentence

There are some reasons showing that it is not a phrasal verb. First, if it were a verb we must use what instead of which. Second, if it were a verb we must turn make into makes. Third, it can't be a verb because make of never remains active when used, only make up can.

Meaning of the sentence #5 (permalink) Tue Dec 28, 2010 15:49 pm   Meaning of the sentence

I asked the assistant which make of hi-fi (that) he recommended.

Another way to look at it as not verb is that the noun phrase ' which make of hi-fi he recommended' is placed in the direct object slot and the noun slot preceeding the adjective clause.

How about that?

I don't think it's the direct object because it's the assistant that is the direct object.
