Translation of a German newspaper article into English: funny accident

Hi, I need some help with my translation. The original article appeared in a German newspaper and I should translate it into English. My question is, how good or bad is my translation?
I've posted the original German article and down below my translation into English.

Please, could you read it and tell me if it's understandable or what's wrong with it.

Die Flucht vor einem Fuchs hat für drei Enten aus dem südpfälzischen Edesheim ein tragisches Ende genommen. Nach Polizeiangaben vom Freitag hatten die Tiere mit mehreren Gänsen in einem Gehege gelebt, um das nach Angaben des Besitzers immer wieder ein Fuchs geschlichen war. Als der Fuchs am Donnerstag erneut auftauchte, flogen die Enten davon. Sie landeten auf einer Straße des Ortes, wo sie in der Dunkelheit von einem Auto überfahren wurden.

Translation: English

The escaping of three ducks has taken a tragic end in the south-palatine village called Edesheim.
According to a police report lived the animals together with other goose inside the duck house which was frequently tip-toed by a fox.
On Thursday the fox appeared again, so the ducks flew away. They landed on a nearer street where they were run over by a crossing car in the darkness.

Here is my suggestion:

Three ducks met a tragic end while trying to escape a fox in the German village of Edesheim.
According to Friday's police report, the doomed ducks had lived together with some geese in an enclosure, which a fox was often seen prowling around.
When the fox reappeared on Thursday, the ducks flew away. They landed on a nearby street, where they were run over by a car in the darkness.


I wouldn't bother trying to translate 'südpfälzischen'. However, if you did, it would have to be capitalized in English. I decided to simply use 'German' instead since that would be more meaningful to most native English speakers.

'In the darkness' to me would need a bit more added, such as 'of the night'. Why not simply translate it as 'in the dark'. How about 'popped up again' for 'erneut auftauchte'? Oder?
