buying and using a car for individuals #1 (permalink) Wed Dec 29, 2010 13:29 pm   buying and using a car for individuals

As countries develop, more and more people buy and use their own cars. Does the advantage of this for individuals outweigh the disadvantage for the environment?

Almost every family has at least one car in Korean society. In relation to buying and using own cars, some people argue that the merits of this for people exceed the demerits for the environment. In the following paragraphs, I will enumerate both two major merits and demerits of having a car and insist that I disagree with them.

As everyone knows, cars have an indispensable role in the world. By having a car, we do not have the limitation of time and space. We can go anywhere regardless whether there the means of transportation are or not. In addition, using cars is so convenient. For example, we should occasionally stand on the bus when we are so exhausted, because there are no enough seats to sit. However, we no longer need to worry about that, as long as we have our own cars.

Even though, having and buying own cars have several advantages for individuals, but it has also disadvantages for the environment. One is noxious gases emitted from cars, especially oxygen dioxide. Those gases cause global warming. The other is limited natural resources. To make and use a car, lots of resources are needed and we cannot use natural resources forever.

Finally, money investing for the recovery of the destroyed environment, such as global warming, air pollution, is enormous as much as we cannot image. We sometimes cannot recovery it. Moreover, we have the obligation to pass on our precious and clean environment to the next generation.

Taking all that into consideration, the advantages of buying and using a car for individuals cannot outweigh its disadvantages for the environment.

Thank you for helping me, have a nice day :)
