Advertising is the only main cause of unhealthy eating habits #1 (permalink) Mon Jan 03, 2011 6:09 am   Advertising is the only main cause of unhealthy eating habits

Hi, I'm new here. I think this website is of great help for students preparing TOEFL test. Thanks for the coach who is getting to rate my first essay posted here.

I disagree with the statement that advertising is the only major reason for eating unhealthy.

Admittedly, the advertisements of McDonald's do lure people to eat hambegers with higher fat and calories. Furthermore, the cool and exciting feelings created in CocaCola's advertisings encourage more consumers to purchase carbonated drinks which do harm to their teeth and bones development. What's more, the variety of delicious tastes in Lay's advertising attract more people to enjoy fried chips which increase the risks of obesity.

However, to say that advertising is the only cause of unhealthy eating habits is an exaggeration. First of all, the faster pace of life is one of the important reasons leading people to eat unhealthy food. Nowadays, a majority of people working in offices don't have enough time to fully eat their lunch in restaurants due to the heavy workload. So one possible solution is to order some fast food and eat them up in a few minutes and then go back to work. In addition, to avoid being sleepy and keep high spirits when they are working, more and more employees drink excessive coffee every day which may result in overexcitement and insomnia.

Secondly, the tradition and culture of a country can also affact people's eating habits to some extent. For example, Koreans usually have salted food while Chinese often eat Youtiao, a fried oily food for breakfast. From a healthy eating prespective, those food should be excluded in the menu. As a kind of food representing old custom and culture, however, they should be kept so that people can get familiar with their past.

Thirdly, in some circumstances, people have unhealthy food not because they want to but they don't have money to buy fresh or organic food with high nutritions. In several regions of Africa, when living becomes the most vital problem, how would residents pay more attention to what they eat, whether the food are healthy or not? All they care about is having something to eat rather than eating healthy or not.

In summary, I think to say advertising is the only main cause of unhealthy eating habits doesn’t hold the water.

Not too bad Saibobo. You need to plan what you are going to write before doing so. Jot down your ideas on a piece of paper and try to organise them in order of importance before you begin.
