i was wondering if... grammar #1 (permalink) Tue Jan 04, 2011 1:04 am   i was wondering if... grammar

Which one of these is grammatically correct?
1) I was wondering if you were interested in football

2) I was wondering if you are interested in football

I have another question. Is this sentence grammatically correct?

-They were allowed to do anything as long as they don't harm other people.

If this sentence is not correct, then is it like this?
: They were allowed to do anything as long as they didn't harm other people.

thank you very much,
from John

All these are acceptable:
I was wondering if you were interested in football.
I was wondering if you are interested in football.
I wonder if you are interested in football.
I am wondering if you are interested in football.

They were allowed to do anything as long as they didn't harm other people.
They are allowed to do anything as long as they don't harm other people.

Very little in reality!
They are pretty much interchangeable.
It's down to personal choice whether you say 'was wondering' (i.e. was wondering up to the point when I asked) or 'am wondering' (i.e. am wondering right now).
and also whether you say 'were interested' (i.e. have been interested right up to this time) or 'are interested' (i.e. are interested right now).

They are different ways of making the same enquiry... and being faced with this sort of choice is one of the things that makes English hard to learn.
