Hello.

I could not understand what was going on as I was standing on the extreme outer edge of the crowd.

It's from here:

Doesn't the part in bold sound verbose? I mean an edge of something, in this case of a crowd, marks its boundaries. Why outer? A crowd can't have an inner edge. What do you think?

TI think you need to read the rest of the thread, where that phrase (which was offered by a learner of English) was discussed.
