You have decided to give several hours each month to improve the community where you live. What is one thing you will do to improve your community? Why? Use specific reasons and details to explain your choice.

Contributing to development of my community is a significant job. As a high shool student, I have decided to spent several hours each month teaching the illiterate. By doing this, I can help not only them and my community but also myself.

To begin with, teaching the illiterate important skills such as reading is a means of helping them to keep up with modern life. Unable to read, they are limited to the world, no information of current events or knowledge about things around them. When others keep moving forwards, they are left behind. But everything will change if they are taught how to read and write. They will be able access to the source of human knowledge through books, newspaper and the Internet. They can express their attitute, their idea and their emotion in a new form: writing. Their future is more insured when hey have the possibility to learn any job they are interested in themselves. By volunteering to teach them these things, I help them gain more succeed in life.

Moreover, doing this is a way I can contribute to my community. This will help to reduce the illiteracy rate in society, which is a thorny problem to solve. One student may not account to much, but the widespreading of this activity will result in a remarkable one. It is likely that the this will have longlerm positive effect in the future. For example, there will be less unemployment, the society will remain more stable.

Finally, when it comes to myself, doing volunteer work like that will give me a lot of fun and new experiences. I find my self more valuable and my work meaningfull in this life. I have more strength to keep trying on. Besides, I come up with a great deal of experiences that I have never got before. When doing this, not only do teach other, but I am also received precious practical lessons.

In conclusion, I believe teaching the illiterate is such a substantial job that not only me but everyone should take part in.
