What means a runner up (refers to a word)? I only find in a dictionary that to run up is to climb

This word means someone who comes second in a race or competition - not far behind the winner/leader.

Runner-up is a word used to refer to someone who is in second place in a competition for instance.

And the winner for Miss world 2010 is Ms so and so.
