to use ~ verb ----> using ~ gerund (verbal noun, noun made of a verb)
to sing ~ verb ----> singing ~ gerund
to learn ~ verb ----> learning ~ gerund

He likes learning languages. "learning" here is gerund.

He stood in the lobby listening to the radio.

"listening" here isn't a gerund but present participle.

Similar sentence to this one is below

He was listening to the radio while he was standing in the lobby.

"listening" and "standing" are not gerunds here but present participles.
