'Preventative' with a 'ta' also exists, Dingota. It's an alternative to 'preventive'.

I wonder why posters don't use dictionaries before they post. I did and you did, BN.

'preventive' vs. 'preventative'? #6 (permalink) Sat Oct 22, 2011 20:32 pm   'preventive' vs. 'preventative'?

Quoted from the Grammarist: "Preventive is the original adjectival form of prevent, but preventative has gained ground—now appearing about a third as often as preventive—and most dictionaries list it as an acceptable variant. Whether or not preventative is correct, it is now so common that we can’t help but accept it.
In any event, preventative is most often used in publications and websites not known for their high editorial standards—for example:
Free preventative services coverage kicks in on many health plans this coming September. [Babble.com]
Shouldn’t all fishing come to a halt as a preventative measure? [CNN.com]
And it’s occasionally used in publications with higher standards:
Preventative measures [headline, Chicago Sun-Times]
Meanwhile, most higher-standards publications use preventive:
In addition, new private plans will have to offer free preventive care, without co-payments or deductibles. [NY Times]
And people weren’t getting tests or preventive care that could help them avoid heart attacks, diabetes or cancer. [WSJ]
Preventive measures are simple and cost-effective. [Financial Times]"

Maybe it's just an example of my personal likes & dislikes. Preventative sounds pretentious to me. Also, i really did not want to start a war!

No war - but as you are insisting on pressing the point, to say higher-standard publications don't use 'preventative' is nonsense.

"Preventative" word does exist in most of the English dictionaries. But, there are some dictionaries which are not including this word.
