Hi,

Sorry we don't do translations here! Another word for simply in English is just.

Ajanah, calling Alan too narrow-minded to be a moderator is what by your definition? And what does as long as English is on the way mean?

Hi Ajanah,

I deeply resent your comment about being narrow minded. I think there is enough evidence of my work on this site to indicate that there is not a sign of narrowmindedness. The reason why I said:

Quote:

is because that is not the function of this particular forum. Having taught English now on and off for the last 40 years, I have found the biggest temptation is to translate a word rather than try to explain it. Once you translate, you find that there are those who also want a translation into a language with which you are not familiar and the result is chaos. That's the reason why I have no intention of yielding to that temptation however beguiling it may appear.

hi Alan,
just one question: why did you delete the translation made by the other moderator?
On the other hand, you should've made that remark to the one who asked for a french translation to "simply"...then, it would've been more appropriate to give him the translation and let him decide on the procedure by himself...
Hi Andreana,
As for using "narrow-minded", I meant not ready to accept the use of another language other than English...
Translation has never been the "end of the world" - & we all have enough teaching experience to assume that - as long as english is "on the other side", I meant "as long as the translation is to or from english"... Wink

Ajanah, the translation was removed by me because on our website we have two software tools (provided by Ectaco and Google) that translate any word or text from and to a great number of different languages.
If you read Alan's post carefully, you might understand why explaining words in English is more useful than translating.
