I'd usually consider 'conversation' to be light in subject matter; you'd converse about the weather, about friends, about how someone is doing, etc. It usually implies a degree of informality; consensus is not necessary, nor would any element to persuade the other party be expected. Think of a 'conversation' as something you might have with a stranger on a train about how much it has rained today.

A 'debate' is usually much heavier in subject matter; one debates about politics, religion, morality, etc. This can either be formal or informal depending on the context; consensus is not expected, nor is agreement, but both parties would usually attempt to persuade one other. Think of a 'debate' as something you're likely to see a Prime Minister having with the oppositional party leader over the legality of abortion.

A debate is basically a "competition" and is usually more formal, objective etc than everyday conversation. The person/team who makes their points better usually wins the debate.

In conversation you can be more "informal" and opinionated/creative - I enjoy a good laugh - talking a bit of "crap"(nonsense) when with friends - you would never do that in a debate.
