Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What is your view? ============================================================== People seldom agree with each other on the main responsibilities of university professors, doing research or educating students? In my opinion, a well qualified university professor will greatly emphasize on the both sides, by the same time and effort nearly.
Different from those ordinary teachers in primary or high schools, university professors are not ones who need to force their students to learn. Instead, they are good at guiding university students to learn by themselves, through lectures, classes or some other activities, rather than teaching the students to do every step. Therefore, university professor must have more time to do their research, in order to discover more about the scientific field.
Actually, doing research is beneficial to those university professors during their general education. On the one hand, the theories in text books are assumed by the former people, which may not be perfect or practical enough in today. Consequently, professors’ researching programs are testing the given theories to some extent. On the other hand, most of the professors’ research programs aim to innovate, to find out the “new things”, so all of these researchers are contributing to the general scientific world, which is remarkable indeed. Therefore, to those university professors, doing research can provide them with more current and vivid teaching resources, not just the solo results of the former ones. Undoubtedly, students will achieve better education in the university.
Certainly, one of the most important duties to university professors is to educate students. They should teach the students not only the basic theories and how to applying them, but also how to be a qualified adult, who will join the society after graduating from university. To university professors, education course is no longer an easy task. However, they cannot overlook their research as well. Thus, it is pretty significant for university professor to find a balance between doing research and educating students, to distributing their time appropriately.
In a word, it is rather superficial to simply say that university professors should spend more time on researching or educating, for these two respects are interconnected, and a good university professor must take both two sides into plan. ============================================================ I found it hard to give the examples, and I could not write too much in 30 minutes. Can anyone help me? Thank you in advance.(*^__^*)
