Dear to whom may it concern,
Would you please make clear to me, what does 'modifier' mean when it is used in an English dictionary? The second question is, what does it mean?[as modifier] a banqueting hall.http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/banquet?view=uk

modifiers precede another word to make it clearer or add some more information to it.
a banqueting hall is just a hall for banqueting.

Modifiers can be placed before the head (premodifiers) as well as after the head (postmodifiers).

Tis my opinion

a banqueting hall.

"banqueting" here is an attributive adjective.

These lobbies are useful for successful banqueting. ('are" is a linking verb which is used to link the predicative adjective to the noun that is qualified)

"useful" here is a predicative adjective. (it qualifies the lobbies)

successful ~ attributive adjective
