151. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Watching television is bad for children. Use specific details and examples to support your answer.
Television has been the center of conflict for the past decades. Some people think that television is useful for children while others believe that television is bad for children. I disagree with this statement for the reasons below.
Firstly, there are many educational channels on television. I just moved to South Korea for college. I’m currently staying at my grandparents’ house until I start the first semester in March. There are not many things to do in the house, so I resort to watching television all day. While I’ve been surfing the channels with my remote, I noticed that there are many channels dedicated to academic subjects (math and English being the most common). I realized that many children can learn a lot from those channels. One day, I decided to watch the channel that taught English. I was in awe during the whole viewing because of how well the teacher taught English. She taught words by pointing at toys and stuffed animals. This method was very effective and all children participated.
Also, watching television reduces stress. Children like adults are vulnerable to stress. Children mostly obtain their stress from school or other school related activities. When I was 6 years old, my mom made me take piano, art, and Taekwondo class all at the same time. And on top of that, I had school. As a result, I felt enormous amount of stress. The only thing that relieved my stress was the television. When I came home from those three classes, I immediately turned on my television to see my favorite show: The Power Rangers. During the viewing, I realized that my stress level was going down as I slowly zoned into the program. Television made me conquer all those extra classes. I was able to smile in times of adversities because of the television.
To sum it up, television is not bad for children. Television has many channels dedicated to academic subjects and it reduces stress.
