Ever went hungry - Welcome to Manchester #1 (permalink) Wed Feb 23, 2011 16:20 pm   Ever went hungry - Welcome to Manchester

Was just listening to BBC radio.... People were phoning in saying they had no food to eat. Im on a diet at the minute trying to lose a few pounds - But I can't imagine what it must be like for people who are hungry but not on a diet??
The word - Dick·en·si·an was used quite a few times - It really did sound like something from another age.. :-(

Have you ever went hungry on bad times?

Manchester's poorest areas

Within a four-mile radius of the Labour Party conference in Manchester there are over 50,000 people living in some of the most deprived areas in the country. So what's the scale of child poverty where you live?
For many people in Manchester, life is a constant financial struggle. And statistics show that the level of deprivation in some Manchester neighbourhoods is worse than almost anywhere else in the UK.

In some areas, 99% of children live in poverty

For instance, in parts of Bradford, Harpurhey and Hulme, 99% of children are officially 'income deprived.' (see definition below)
According to a 2004 survey, 27 of Manchester’s 33 wards are among the most deprived 10% of wards nationally, with one neighbourhood in the Harpurhey ward considered to be the second poorest in the country.
Child poverty: by area
The figures below reveal the 20 neighbourhoods in Greater Manchester where child poverty is at its highest and the ward that they are in:
Ward Council % children in poverty
Bradford Manchester 99
Harpurhey Manchester 99
Hulme Manchester 99
Ardwick Manchester 98
Langworthy Salford 98
