INVEST: LIBRARIES OR SPORTS FACILITY? #1 (permalink) Sun Feb 27, 2011 4:02 am   INVEST: LIBRARIES OR SPORTS FACILITY?

TOPIC:Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sport activities as they give to their university libraries.

Though the main purpose of universities is to develop students’ intellectual ability, athletics is still of pivotal importance. Personally, I agree with the statement that universities should give the same amount of money to their students’ sport activities as they give to their university libraries due to the following reasons.

First, playing sports simultaneously improves students’ health and academic performance. Obviously, students who play sports frequently have better health than those who do not. For example, they can adapt to changing weather more easily and are not affected much by illnesses. As a sequence, they can devote their stamina to enhance their studies without being troubled with health problems.

Secondly, students can also learn a lot of necessary skills on the sports fields. Most obviously, they can learn how to work in a team. In football, for example, students will know how to cooperate to make a strong team. Team members will have to try their best to communicate effectively in order to gain agreement from each other. They will know how to avoid conflicts after experiencing disagreements in their team and this really helps them in their future careers. More than that, by taking roles like team leaders, students can also develop their leadership skills, which is critically important.

Last but not least, by investing large amount of money in sports facility, universities can attract more students. When students make a decision to enroll a university, they not only consider its academic life but also student life. A university which offers a wide range of sports obviously brings its students more choices of activities. As a result, the university will acquire a reputation for having strong athletic programs and more students will develop thier interest in it.

In short, sports always play an important part in a university. By investing sufficiently in sports facility, universities will not only have a better academic life but also gain reputation for the rich of extra-curricular activities and attract more students.
