Many people argue that exams are the best way to assess people's competence and that no better system has yet been found. Others say they are unfair, unhelpful and out-of-date.
The discussion, which is connected with the examination system, has become very strained among students. There are two pole positions on this issue. The first one is that exams are very democratic and they estimate real student's knowledge of a particular science. At the same time, another group of student's society accentuates our attention to the fact that many talented students are not able to prepare very well for their exams because of some external factors. At the same time, it is important to outline that, from my point of view; despite some disadvantages, exams imply more honest assessment of student's knowledge than anything else does. Firstly, many students suggest that there are different people many of whom are very sociable, and for them it is not a problem to show their real opportunities at the exam. However, other students are shy and for these people it is difficult to be concentrated at an exam. Moreover, many students believe that a particular student can be a victim of misapprehension between him/her and his/her teacher, which can lead to a worse mark because of the teacher's subjective attitude. As a result, students propose several pioneering ideas in this field such as using homework and other written assignments as the evidence of student's opportunities in a particular science. They believe that it can increase comprehension between teachers and students. Secondly, it would not be a democratic discussion if there was only one opinion. The significant numbers of students suppose that exams are the most appropriate kind of assesment of student’s knowledge. They argue their position by the fact that many students work and they cannot participate very well in seminars at university. Moreover, some students do serious scientific research, and the do not tend to spend so much time on written assignments. As a result, they choose an exam is the most suitable solution to this problem. Thirdly, both points of view should be respected, however, it is important to outline those problems of the first group students can be overcome easily. The solutions to this problem are the improvement of opportunities for unsociable students to receive additional help from teachers. However, the overwhelming majority of students believe that an exam is the best approach to this problem because there are much more benefits for students, such as the possibility to work avoiding serious participation in seminars. Moreover, from my point of view, exams create students' lives less stressful and more flexible because you can economise much time and to spend it on the organisation of your private life. In conclusion, it is vital to emphasise the key points of the present essay. There are two opposite opinion on the problem. However, exams are more suitable for the present educational system because the disadvantages of exams can be remedied very quickly, but the benefits are much more obvious. The most important aspect is that a student becomes freer person. I believe that the examination is the method, which is breathing new life into the educational system.
