Can advertising tell about a country?
Everyday, we can see thousand advertisements on streets. They are posted on windows of stores, attached to travel brochures or appear on screens of ATM machines, etc. Basically, a traditional advertisement sends consumers information of new products. However, more than commercial purposes, advertisements can introduce images of a country, telling international tourists about history, culture and typical creatures of that land.
Fist of all, people can visualize the culture of a nation when they watch clips which are broadcasted to attract foreigners to visit heritages in that country. Imagines in these clips usually relate to traditional ceremonies, daily activities and unique costumes of local residents living in that land. Therefore, by watching these advertisements we, can know something about the culture of that nation without traveling to it. For example, last week I saw an advertisement produced by Saigontourist – a famous air ticket agency on TV. The advertising showed a conventional dance called “Nhay sap” of a tribe settling in the North of Vietnam. Through it, I know Vietnamese often have evening ceremonies in the lunar March and people dance in these occasions to make friend.
Second, logos or trademark of some companies, commonly handicraft manufacturing workshops, can introduce typical creatures of a country. Take the Battrang Village, well-know for making craft products from Bamboo for instance. The drawing on the logo of this workshop is a stylized yellow bamboo. This image may suggest tourists think of this kind of tree as a symbol of Vietnam and its popularity on this land. In this case, the logo is not purely an advertisement; it is actually a picture about nature and lives in my home town.
Third, through ads, people can know about main events in historical timeline of a nation. Watching photos of Angkovat on the cover of some brochures published by travel agencies, I recall lessons in high school. Some records of history told that Angkovat was once the capital of Old Cambodia Empire in the period from 1300 to 1410. Although it was sunk into oblivion for than 300 years that followed, it is now considered a significant part of Cambodian civilization. In this way, history stories about a nation can be broadcasted by using advertisements; give tourists strong impressions about beauty of man, nature in that land.
All in all, advertising is an effective way to give images of a nation to foreigner. Knowledge of culture, history and typical creatures in a specific country can be conveyed to international friends through pictures, logos or advertising clips. This is not only beneficial for travel industry, but offer more choices to other businesses in broadcasting new products to their consumers.
