Sorry, I didn't see this thread before now. I've responded here: http://www.english-test.net/forum/sutra345355. Sorry your email didn't get through, Alan; it didn't end up in my spam filter, so I'll have to check the links.

Not plenty of warning, I'm afraid, OTS - particularly for tsunamis generated so close to the coast. Old folks without cell phones had only half an hour to realize that there was a tsunami warning and get to high ground somehow.

Hi Charles,

Glad you're back safe and sound. This site certainly wouldn't be the same without your incisive and accurate responses.

Best wishes,

God Bless all people of Japan. Its a devastating news, I just hope people have enough strength to get through this rough ordeal. I saw pictures and read news, 4 trains carrying around 1300 people are missing, 10000 people are missing in total, waves were 23 feet high and worst is there has been a massive explosion at nuclear plant.
I wonder why on earth did they make a nuclear plant even after they saw what nuclear did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

So sad to see what is going on there..it reminds me of what happened in 2004, when some Asian countries were severely hit by tsunami. Indonesia was the worst-hit, then Sri Lanka. I am from Indonesia, and my mom spent her childhood in Aceh and she cried every time she asked for information about her friends in Aceh or received a phone call from there or her friends here telling about their friend`s condition. Hope they recover soon and we are sure they can

After one of the most disastrous earthquakes followed by tsunami in the North-East coast of Japan spreading along the Pacific Ocean even up to Californian coast, it is really difficult to overcome the shock and its aftermath. The YouTube raw video of the tsunami posted in this forum page recorded live by NHK from the helicopter is heartbreaking. It’s the live coverage from Sendai area of Miagi prefecture of tsunami engulfing several cities, farmlands and so on.

It’s really praiseworthy to see that the Japanese brothers and sisters are not whining but are in immediate actions of facing the reality. The whole world is with the victims in all round efforts to minimize the devastating aftermath.

Wish immediate recovery of the victims in all respect!

As the radiation level surged from a stricken Japanese nuclear power plant the crisis seems spiraling out of control. As the fire broke out at the earthquake-crippled nuclear plant low levels of radiation was wafting into Tokyo in the past 24 hours, triggering both fear in the capital and international alarm. People are asked to remain indoors, as authorities grappled with the world's most serious nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986.

Officials in Tokyo said radiation in the capital was 10 times normal at one point but not a threat to human health in the sprawling high-tech city of 13 million people. But residents have nevertheless reacted to the crisis by staying indoors. Public transport and the streets are as deserted as they would be on a public holiday, and many shops and offices are closed.

Japan and US were enemies to each other during the WWII, and it was US who perpetrated the nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki which was a inhuman deed in the history not to forget!

History has taken a turn now -- US is now helping twin disaster stricken Japan to cool down the overheated nuclear unit of Fukushima nuclear plant by pouring water in a combat style jointly with the Japanese efforts!

Let peace prevail all over the world!

Hi

We should appreciate US helping Japan for its disaster. We should forget the
past what US did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki during IInd world War.
We should see only the present situation not past, then only we can see
peacefulness in the world.

Thank you

The scale of risk due to nuclear radiation from the stricken plant of Fukushima is read at 5 now which were rated at 4 since last Friday. In the meantime international community was in an opinion that Japan was underplaying with the scale of nuclear disaster.

It is badly needed to provide with all out supports, morally and materially, to Japan and its victims at this grave incident due to the unprecedented twin natural calamity of earthquake and tsunami.

How fair the relief operation is underway after the catastrophic disaster in Japan? Emergency shelters are in operation since after the affect of the devastating disaster. The overall situation is grim indeed, especially when the temperature drops very low at night causing snow falls. What is the actual death toll? The official death count is 5200, while another 10000 is still missing. In search of missing family members there are people who moves around the debris, and sighs of nothing the chances of finding them back! They utter in despair that the chances are remote to find the missing relatives. Some have criticized the slow response of the authorities in this catastrophic situation. Authority, of course, indicates the unprecedented magnitude of the disaster. The most grievous fact is the lines of communication destroyed. US extended significant help in the worst affected Miagi prefecture so that flights can get in to reestablish the communication networks. Obviously, this situation is too big for any country of the world to handle!
