Yesterday, in BBC’s HARD TALK show, I saw the interview of Ms. Elaine, a renowned biologist & oceanographer. She told that the teachings of her biology school teacher have inspired her to pursue her research on the bio diversity of an ocean. It clearly signifies the importance of studying under the guidance of a teacher. On the other hand, with the advent of new technology, student’s fascination towards distance learning, self learning & e- learning has been slowly increasing. While there are some advantages with these methods, such as flexibility in time & in location, I believe that class room training is more helpful for students and its advantages are unparalleled to that of any other mode of learning. According to a recent survey, which is conducted to find out the diversity of students in various US universities, about 30% of students in a university are from different countries. Survey has also revealed that there is a blend of students from different regions, religions & ethnicities. Hence by coming to the university & by attending the classes, students will have better chance to know about different cultures and different religions across the world. Without any guidance, it would be difficult for a student to study efficiently. Whereas, in a class room, the professor, with his vast experience & knowledge on the topic, will guide his students ably. I will never forget my Bio-Technology professor’s guidance & advices, which helped me in completing my thesis successfully. Without his help, I would not have been able to submit it on time. Having a discussion on a topic is one of the best ways to understand the gist of it. Debates and discussions will also allow the students to think about a topic from different a perspective. Hence by participating in a class room discussion or a debate and listening to different explanations, students will get a better understanding of the subject and gain more knowledge. Some of us may argue that self paced learning is more flexible. For me it appears to be more time consuming. Without listening to the professor’s lecture and participating in class room discussions, it takes more time for us to understand the topic. Without his guidance, we perhaps have to spend more time in gathering the useful information. Hence I think a university class room is still the best place to acquire knowledge.
