An altar is a place in a Christian church were gifts are given to God. Usually the Christian wedding ceremony takes place in front of the altar.

For my opinion, you can not stand "on" the altar because it is a place rather than a thing like a chair or a table.

Hi,

An altar in the practical sense of the word is a sort of table and you wouldn't stand on the table but beside it or at it.
