TEOFEL@Should high school students take a course on basic economics?

Nowadays, some experts suggest that high school student should take a course on basic economics, while some parents are against this point of view because the want their children to concentrate on their major courses such as math and English. From my personal perspective, I hold the opinion that high school students should learn some basic economics.

First of all, students should learn some basic economic rules which will greatly help them to manage their own money. Because of "One Child Policy" in China, every family has only one child, so they have more allowance and sometimes their parents are always too busy to teach their child how to use money with control. However, by learning some basic economics course, they can obtain some knowledge about how to make budget planning and how to use our money wisely. It are economics courses that can teach us make end meet earlier in high school, instead of going to colleges knowing nothing with the money management.

In addition, basic economic class may inspire high school students' interests in this area. By taking economy course, students can discover their intrigue in economy after they gain some knowledge about economy. Take myself for example; when I was a high school student, my school had an economy class for grade 2 students. At that time, I did know nothing about economy, but after that class I found that economy was so related to our daily life and I decided to take economy as my major in college. Thus, now I’m a student who majored in economy and I really appreciate that class in my high school.

Admittedly, there is no denying that taking an economy course may cost students’ time. However it can facilitate the improvement of their independence. Besides, excellent parents and teachers will pay more attention on children’s ability to live on their own, instead of considering scores insularly. Only these parents and teachers can help students to build up right personalities.

In a nutshell, high school student should take a course on basic economics in order to learn how to manage their money, find their interests and be independent.
