Do+verb #2 (permalink) Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:13 am   Do+verb

Hi kinlihk2000,

The auxiliary (helping) verb do is mostly used when you form a question or a negative in the Present Tense.

So we have: Question: Do you speak English?
Answer: No, I don't (do not) speak English.

The auxiliary do is also used sometimes when you want to emphasise your remark in the Present: I do hope you will enjoy yourself -this means I hope very much you will enjoy yourself.

Again we can use do with the imperative to make it sound more emphatic as in: Do stop talking!
