Nowadays, it is a common phenomenon that a lot of prominence is being given to science and mathematics over literature and history. Ironically, all those people who rank science and math over history fail to understand that all these fields are interdependent on each other. I understand it is difficult for any person to master all these fields at once. However, it is useful for all the students to have basic knowledge in all these subjects. So at elementary and high school level, students should give equal importance to all the subjects whereas at university level, they can go by their personal interest and select a specialization.

Language, an integral part of literature, is the means through which we express our feelings or findings. History is nothing but a collection of our previous failures and achievements. How do we narrate a scientific invention or mathematics theorem without a language? How can we forget the importance of history in today’s scientific inventions and innovations? All these fields have helped us in their own ways.

Whatever we do today becomes a history for tomorrow. Similarly, all those discoveries, inventions and experiments of our elders are history for us today. We can’t discard their inventions and analyses just because they were all history. Can We? In fact these experiments, inventions and discoveries are the basis for most of our present day innovations. Even though today’s airplanes are much faster and technically more advanced than the one developed by Wright brothers in early 1900’s, basic design of a modern flight is no different from the design of Wright brothers.

Last week I have attended a seminar on Mathematics. Many mathematicians have explained their theories and discussed on certain developments in the field of mathematics. Many books were written and published by some of them. Had it not been because of language or literature, they wouldn’t be able to write books, explain their theories and discuss with others.

No one denies the importance of science and mathematics in our welfare and development. Developments and advances in both these fields have helped us invariably to come thus far. However, the fact is that without literature and history, science and mathematics would not have been as beneficial to us as they are today. So I am of the opinion that all these four fields are great in their own respect and it is good for students to have at least basic understanding in all these fields.
