Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. Child development provides an essential foundation to a person's life. Within parent education programs, we often ask participants to picture what they'd like their children to become when they grow up. What career do we envision for them? What kind of relationships do we hope for them? What kind of parents will they become? What kind of a person do we wish for them to be? Child abuse can destroy the hopes and dreams we have for our children. It can shake the foundation that is necessary for children to grow into healthy, well-functioning adults. Abuse and neglect affect cognitive development, behavior, mental and physical health. Most parents want to be good parents, but stressors in life can get in the way. Sometimes one bad life decision that impacts an adult's life can have disastrous consequences for children, such as using drugs or alcohol or entering into a relationship that later becomes abusive. Child abuse is preventable. Teaching parents about ages and stages and positive discipline and other useful parenting techniques makes a tremendous difference. _________________ Never give up trying, if you want to achieve something in life. |
