I am writing an e-mail to professor asking for a Ph.D. position. Is it good enough. Please give me suggestion.

I am Nanudom. I am a scientist at Soil Science and Conservation Division, Faculty of Agriculture, ................................

I am interested in applying for Ph.D. in Environmental Soil Chemistry Program. I know you by the internationally research and the ‘Environmental Soil Chemistry’ book and is an advisor to many students at Deleware Environmental Institute.

My research interest focuses on soil remediation from heavy metal contamination. According to the problems of cadmium contamination in rice in Mea Sot, the major source of jasmine rice cultivation in Thailand. I want to apply the knowledge to solve and manage this problem in my country. In addition, I have an experience in M.S. thesis in topic ‘Potential of leachate to leach cadmium from contaminated soil’.

I am writing to asked if you would determine my qualifications as the Ph.D. applicant. My CV and experience are attached.

If you are sending this to a professor in a western university, you should not begin it by announcing your name. The signature at the end does that and people are quite used to checking the end of the letter before reading the contents if they feel it is appropriate to do so. What needs to come first is the purpose of writing, which you leave until the end.

I am a scientist at the Soil Science and Conservation Division, Faculty of Agriculture, ................................
I am applying for a Ph.D. in an Environmental Soil Chemistry Program and as your Department has an international reputation for research in this field I would like to be considered as a possible Ph. D student under your tutelage.

My research interest focuses on soil remediation from heavy metal contamination. Specifically I intend to examine the problems of cadmium contamination in rice in Mea Sot, the major source of jasmine rice cultivation in Thailand. I want to apply the knowledge gained from that study to solve and manage this problem in my country. I already have some experience from my M.S. thesis on the topic of ‘The Potential of Leachate to Leach Cadmium from Contaminated Soil’.

I understand that my current qualifications are of a level which will enable me to embark upon this course and it would be an honour for me if you would consider giving me a place on a Ph. D. course. My CV is attached. If you require any further information, please contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Yours faithfully,
Nanudom--------
