Some people believe that the Earth is being harmed by human activity.

Hi,
I am preparing for the Toefl iBT test on 28 May and I would like to know some impressions about my essay.

Topic:
"Some people believe that the Earth is being harmed by human activity. Others feel that human activity makes the Earth a better place to live".

Nowadays there are many scientifical researches that support the idea of the Earth being harmed by human activity, thus many debates have been started related to this subject. Anyway, there are people who believe that human activity can only improve the quality of life on Earth, which is true in some certain situations.

The progress of industry leads to a negative impact on the environment as it has increased the pollution, it has depleted many natural resources, so several consequences should be mentioned.
Firstly, it is well known that pollution has negative effects on the environment as it releases into the air a high level of carbon dioxide which directly affects the Earth’s O-Zone shield, consequently the temperature on Earth raises and the ice on the poles melts down.
Secondly, the uncontrollable desire for money have made humans to almost deplete valuable natural resources such as petrol, lumber, or to make some species of animals extinct because of poaching. Petrol, for example, is almost fully consumed as it has been exploited so badly due to many reasons. Therefore, human need to find alternative energy very soon, otherwise many industries will collapse.

On the other hand, human activity has improved the quality of life over the centuries.. Nowadays, we are used to drive a car, although it is a source of pollution, to consume thousand of paper sheets, although many trees are cut for that, but do you imagine how the world would look without all these things which are an indispensible part of our life? Human activity has led to the invention of other essential elements of our life such as electricity, internet, television and, if we think about a better life as a healthier life, then the progress in medicine is of a major importance.

Taking everything into account, I trully believe that people should be more responsible with their actions as it may permanently harm the environment, consequently deteriorating their own health, and they need to appreciate what the Earth has given to them and stop destroying it.

Thanks a lot for replying, I really appreciate it!

No I didn't time myself, but it took me around 30-40 minutes. The tough part is to think about ideas and examples which take me about 10 minutes from the time... I know that TOEFL Writing test has only 30 minutes, so I guess I have to stretch the time a bit

20 minutes, 5 for ideas, 2-3 reasons only.

First write down whether you are against or not against the topic. Then write the conclusion which includes the topic and your opinion(agree or disagree).
Then start writing body of essay, first reason, a little explaination, and an example or two.
Then second reason , explaination and an example or two.
Read different articles so you can write better. Open your mind a bit.
