Hello,

The book English Phrasal Verbs in Use: Advanced lists this example sentence:

He's kept his old bike as a standby.

I sometimes say things like the following (probably influenced by my computer education, where the word backup is extremely common):

He's kept his old bike as a backup.

Is my usage correct or shall I stick to the word standby?

'Backup' is fine - it's a person/thing who/that can be called on if necessary.

As I said above, a backup is something that can be called on for use if necessary.

He kept his old bike so that if something went wrong with his new bike, he could use the old one whilst the new one was being repaired.

By the way, you should never write 'wanna' unless you are writing a movie script or a modern song. The phrase is 'want to' and even if it sounds like 'wanna' when it is spoken, it should be written correctly.
